Salsa
Salsa refers to a fusion of informal dance styles having roots in the Caribbean , Latin and North America.

Salsa is usually a partner dance, although there are recognized solo steps and some forms are danced in groups of couples, with frequent exchanges of partner. Improvisation and social dancing are important elements of Salsa but it appears as a performance dance too.

Swing

East and
West

The term "swing dance" commonly refers to a group of dances that developed concurrently with the swing style of jazz music in the 1920s, '30s and '40s, although the earliest of these dance forms predate swing jazz music. The best known of these dances is the Lindy Hop , a popular partner dance that originated in Harlem and is still danced today. While the majority of swing dances began in African American communities as vernacular African American dances , a number of forms (Balboa , for example) developed within Anglo-American or other ethnic group communities.

Shag
Shag originated along the strands between Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina, during the 1940s. It is most often associated with beach music, which refers to songs that are rhythm and blues based and, according to Bo Bryan, a noted shag historian and resident of Beaufort County, is a term that was coined at Carolina Beach, North Carolina.

Ballroom dance refers collectively to a set of partner dances , which originated in Germany and are now enjoyed both socially and competitively around the globe.

Capoeira

Capoeira ( Tupi-Guarani word for - clear area) is a blend of martial art , game , and dance originated in Brazil , from the regions known as Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and São Paulo. The art-form started up in Brazil during the 16th Century, an obvious result of the slave trading that took place in conjunction with the previously slaved native Indians. Capoeira was created and developed by both the native slave Indians in Brazil and slaves brought from Africa. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the center of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints , and extensive use of groundwork , as well as sweeps, kicks, and headbutts . Less frequently-used techniques include elbow-strikes, slaps, punches, and body-throws.

Belly Dance

Belly dance is a Western term for a traditional Middle Eastern dance form. Some American devotees refer to it simply as "Middle Eastern Dance". Native to North Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, belly dancing is based on one of the oldest social dances in world history. There are two forms of belly dancing. The first is called raqs baladi , a social dance performed by people of all ages and by both sexes, during festive occasions- such as weddings- and other social gatherings for fun and celebration. The second form- the more theatrical version- is called raqs sharqi, and it is this type that is most popular in America today. Like raks baladi, raks sharqi is performed by both male and female dancers.

ZumbaZumba is a fitness program inspired by Latin dance . It was founded by Miami-based dancer and choreographer Alberto 'Beto' Perez , who teamed up with two local entrepreneurs: Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion. Zumba combines Latin rhythms with cardiovascular exercise to create an aerobic routine that is fun and easy to follow. The name Zumba is derived from a Colombian word meaning to move fast and have fun.

NiaNia (previously known as Non-Impact Aerobics and Neuromuscular Integrative Action, now referred to simply as "Nia"), pronounced "nee-ya", blends three dance arts ( Isadora Duncan dance, modern dance , and jazz dance ), three martial arts ( aikido , tae kwon do , and tai chi ) and three healing arts ( Alexander Technique , yoga , and Feldenkrais ). It is a form of aerobic exercise .

American Tango

Tango is a musical genre and its associated dance forms that originated in Buenos Aires , Argentina and Montevideo , Uruguay and spread to the rest of the world soon after that.

Early tango was known as tango criollo, or simply tango . Today, there are many tango dance styles, including Argentine Tango , Uruguayan Tango , Ballroom tango (American and International styles) , Finnish tango and vintage tangos. What many consider to be the authentic tango is that closest to that originally danced in Argentina and Uruguay , though other types of tango have developed into mature dances in their own right.

Argentine Tango

Argentine Tango is danced in an embrace that can vary from very open, in which leader and follower connect at arms length, to very closed, in which the connection is chest-to-chest, or anywhere in between. Close embrace is often associated with the more traditional styles, while open embrace leaves room for many of the embellishments and figures that are associated with Tango Nuevo. Tango is essentially walking with a partner and the music. Musicality (i.e. dancing appropriately to the emotion and speed of a tango) is an extremely important element of tangoing . A good dancer is one who makes you see the music. Also, dancers generally keep their feet close to the floor as they walk, the ankles and knees brushing as one leg passes the other.

Bolero Bolero is a 3/4 dance that originated in Spain in the late 18th century, a combination of the contradanza and the sevillana . Dancer Sebastiano Carezo is credited for inventing the dance in 1780. It is danced by either a soloist or a couple. It is in a moderately slow tempo and is performed to music which is sung and accompanied by castanets and guitars with lyrics of five to seven syllables in each of four lines per verse. It is in triple time and usually has a triplet on the second beat of each bar.

Cha Cha

The cha-cha-cha (in Spanish cha-cha-chá ) is a Latin American dance of Cuban origin. There are three flavors of Cha-cha-cha dance, differing by the place of the chachacha chasse with respect to the musical bar . Ballroom Cha-cha and street Cha-cha-cha in Cuba count "two-three-chachacha". Country/western Cha-cha-cha and Latin street Cha-cha-cha in many places other than Cuba count "one-two-chachacha" or "chachacha-three-four".

Country Western
Two-Step

The country/western two-step , often called the "Texas two-step" or simply the "two-step," is a country/western dance usually danced to country music in 4/4 time. It is a progressive dance that proceeds counterclockwise around the floor.

The two-step is a partner dance, consisting of a "leader" (traditionally a man) and a "follower" (traditionally a woman). The leader determines the movements and patterns of the pair as they move around the dance floor.

The partners begin in closed position with the leader facing the line of dance . The follower stands facing the leader. In a traditional "frame" the leader places his/her right hand over his/her partner's left shoulder. In the more contemporary styling, the frame is formed by placing the right hand under the follower's arm, and on his/her back. In either case the leader holds the follower's right hand in his/her left hand at about shoulder height.

Basic two-step consists of two quick steps, followed by two slow steps (or alternately, by two slow steps followed by two quick steps). Leaders may start with either the slow steps, or the quick steps, as local custom dictates.

The leader begins by stepping forward with his/her left foot. The follower begins by stepping backward with his/her right foot.

Foxtrot Social Foxtrot, which is also known as the Rhythm Foxtrot (also called Slow Rhythm) is often taught to beginners of ballroom dancing, and can be danced to the same music as Slow Foxtrot. It is seen as a very 'useful' dance as, unlike Slow Foxtrot, is easy to learn and can be danced on a crowded dance floor in social situations. The dance uses a standard closed Ballroom Hold

Lindy Hop

Lindy Hop is an African American dance that evolved in New York City in 1927. It is a fusion of many dances that preceded it or were popular during its development but is mainly based on jazz , tap , breakaway and charleston . Lindy Hop co-evolved with jazz music and is a member of the swing dance family. It is frequently described as a jazz or street dance .

Line Dances A line dance is a formation dance in which a group of people dance in one or more lines (British English, "rows") without regard for the gender of the individuals, all facing the same direction, and executing the same choreographed movements at the same time. Line dancers are not in physical contact with each other. Older "line dances" have lines in which the dancers face each other, or the "line" is a circle, or all dancers in the "line" follow a leader around the dance floor; while holding the hand of the dancers beside them.

Merengue Merengue was made the official music and dance of the Dominican Republic by Rafael Trujillo . Partners hold each other in a closed position . The man holds the woman's waist with his right hand while keeping his left hand/her right hand at the woman's eye level. The merengue is a two-step beat requiring both partners to bend their knees slightly left and right. This in turn makes the hips move left and right. When danced correctly, the hips of the man and woman will move in the same direction throughout the song.

Nightclub Two-Step

Nightclub Two Step ( Nightclub Two-step , NC2S ) was initially developed by Buddy Schwimmer in the mid- 1960s .

It is frequently danced to mid-tempo ballads in 4/4 time that have a characteristic Quick-Quick-Slow beat, like Lady In Red . Some think NC2s has evolved to include elements from other dances such as Rumba and New York Hustle .

Rhumba

Rumba is a dance organically related to the rumba genre of Afro-Cuban music . Throughout the history one may trace several styles of dances called "rumba".

Some dancers considered rumba the most erotic and sensual Latin dance, for its relatively slow rhythm and the hip movement. Rumba is actually the second slowest Latin dance: the spectrum runs bolero , rumba, cha-cha-cha , mambo in order of the speed of the beat.

Samba

Samba is a lively, rhythmical dance of Brazilian origin in 2/4 time danced under the Samba music . However, there are three steps to every bar, making the Samba feel like a 3/4 timed dance. Its origins include the Maxixe .

The Samba music rhythm has been danced in Brazil since its inception in the late 19th century. There is actually a set of dances, rather than a single dance, that define the Samba dancing scene in Brazil; thus, no one dance can be claimed with certainty as the "original" Samba style. Another major stream of the Samba dance besides the Brazilian Samba dancing styles is Ballroom Samba which differs significantly.

Waltz

In the 19th and early 20th century, numerous different forms of waltz existed, including versions done in 2/4 or 6/8 (sauteuse), and 5/4 time (5/4 waltz, half and half).

In the 1910s, a form called the "Hesitation Waltz" was introduced by Vernon and Irene Castle . It incorporated hesitations and was danced to fast music. A hesitation is basically a halt on the standing foot during the full waltz measure, with the moving foot suspended in the air or slowly dragged.

Bhangra

Bhangra has been hailed by many as the world's fastest growing dance and musical form. Today, bhangra is celebrated everywhere by people of all ages and races – from the radio, to pop music, and even to collegiate competitions.

Bhangra has developed as a combination of dances from different parts of the Punjab region. The term "Bhangra" now refers to several kinds of dances and arts, including Jhumar, Luddi, Giddha, Julli, Daankara, Dhamal, Saami, Kikli, and Gatka. Jhumar, originally from Sandalbar, Punjab, comprises an important part of Punjab folk heritage. It is a graceful dance, based on a specific Jhumar rhythm.
